WHAT IS PILATES REFORMER?
The reformer is the foundation of the Pilates method — the central apparatus traditionally located at the heart of every classical studio. Originally designed by Joseph Pilates with the dimensions still followed today, it earned its name from its purpose: to reform, or reshape, the body.
Composed of a wooden frame and a flat platform (carriage) that moves back and forth on wheels and springs, the reformer allows hundreds of exercises performed lying down, sitting, kneeling, or standing. Each classical reformer features four springs of equal resistance, used in three levels to support or resist movement — making each exercise easier or more challenging based on the practitioner's needs.
Every major teacher certification program (BASI, Polestar, STOTT, Balanced Body, Peak Pilates, Power Pilates, Romana's) uses the reformer.
